Workforce Equality Standard Lead: Professor Anton Emmanuel

Professor Emmanuel led NHS England's Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) and took on the lead role for the implementation of the WRES in Wales in 2023. Following the success of the WRES, Anton Emmanuel is now leading a project implementation group with Welsh Government officials and key delivery partners to deliver the wider Workforce Equality Standard (WES) for Wales.

A Professor of Neuro-Gastroenterology at University College London and Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.  He continues in this role alongside the work for the WES in Wales.

Focussing on ensuring data drives accountability within organisations, Professor Emmanuel has brought his experience from NHS England to ensure the development of the WRES in Wales is impactful.

The drive to create a data standard that covers other characteristics than race is to really understand how the intersection of different protected characteristics influences the experience of inequality in our NHS and social services. This wider understanding will not only reflect the experience of all members of the workforce but also inform the best strategies for organisational policy implementation to reduce inequality.
