Scope:
Relevant courses delivered by Welsh HEI’s plus UK courses suggested by HCRW which are eligible for their HCRW Training Award.
National Institute of Healthcare Research |
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) have created a series of free online e-learning modules that provide a broad overview of research, how to turn your ideas into research projects, research methods, and practical considerations for research. There are nine modules, each taking around 45-60 minutes to complete. You can find out more on the RPS website here.
This is a great starting point for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians interested in research who would like an accessible resource that can be completed at their own pace. The e-learning is hosted on the NIHR Learn platform. Use your NHS email to register for an NIHR Learn account here. |
Health and Care Research Wales |
Various training programmes, webinars and courses |
Health and Care Research Wales is an organisation that supports healthcare practitioners to engage in research. They offer a variety of self-directed and in-person research-related training courses that are free for NHS staff. You can find out more about the resources available here. |
Some higher education institutions and organisations provide short courses covering specific aspects of research methodology. These courses are not always healthcare-specific, although they will often be relevant to healthcare research. Short courses can attract a fee. However, providers often organise free webinars and online content. Short courses may be delivered in-person or online, depending on the nature of the course and the course provider.

MPhil (Master of Philosophy)
Many universities will support MPhil either as a standalone qualification or as a pathway to a PhD. If you are interested in studying for an MPhil qualification, contacting an academic with published research in your area can be a good starting point for discussion.
For an overview of doctoral-level qualifications, please see our Research Training Overview page.
PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
All universities support doctoral-level qualifications. Some doctoral-level projects will be advertised by academic teams with a project idea but no specific PhD candidate in mind. The Find a PhD website can be a good starting point. Alternatively, it is possible to approach an academic with a project idea and create a proposal and a funding application together.
Funding is available for doctoral-level programmes that usually cover the course fees and often provide a non-taxable grant called a stipend to cover basic living expenses. Your academic team will know which funding provider is best suited to your research project.
PhD by publication
The requirements for a PhD by publication will vary depending on the awarding institution. Some universities require a proportion of your included publications to be in collaboration with your academic team.
Professional Doctorate
Below are links to health-related Professional Doctorates provided by Universities in Wales. Depending on your research interests, you may also consider a Professional Doctorate that is not specifically health-related. For example, if you are interested in management or education, the most suitable qualification for you may be hosted by a University School of Business, Management or Education.
